Why Clothes Smell Musty or Sour After Washing

A musty or sour smell after washing is a moisture and residue problem, not a fragrance problem. The usual causes are damp laundry left sitting in the drum, detergent building up in the fibers, and biofilm in the washer gasket, drawer and drain. Adding more scent covers it; drying promptly, dosing correctly and cleaning the machine fixes it. Love Brands' Love Paks are pre-measured at one pak per standard load.

The confusing part is that the load was clean when the cycle ended. The smell arrives afterward, which is why people blame the detergent. In most households the detergent is not the variable that changed. What changed is how long the fabric stayed wet, how humid the air was while it dried, or what has been quietly growing inside the machine since the last time anyone opened the gasket.

Musty, Sour and Wet-Dishcloth Are Three Different Smells

Naming the smell narrows the search. Three distinct things produce three distinct odors, and they call for different fixes.

Musty and mildew point at mold. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that mold grows wherever there is moisture, that fabric and upholstery are among the materials it grows on, and that it can smell musty. That is the damp-basement, wet-cardboard note.

Sour usually points at bacteria rather than mold. Moraxella osloensis, a Gram-negative bacterium found on human skin, produces a compound called 4-methyl-3-hexenoic acid that contributes to clothing and body malodor, as described by Watanabe and colleagues in MicrobiologyOpen in 2024. The same paper notes that this organism is resistant to UV light, drying and antimicrobials, which is why a towel that dried out is not automatically reset.

Wet-dishcloth smell is its own category. Zinn, Singer and Bockmühl built a laboratory model of laundry malodor in Microorganisms in 2021 using three bacteria isolated from smelly textiles — Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus hominis and Corynebacterium jeikeium — and identified dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide and indole as major contributors to that wet-fabric odor.

If the smell is on every load regardless of what is in it, suspect the machine. If it is only on towels, workout clothes and anything thick, suspect drying time. If clothes feel stiff or slick as well as smelling off, suspect the dose.

Damp Laundry Left Sitting in the Drum

This is the easiest of the four to fix, so start here before you buy anything.

The US Environmental Protection Agency's guidance on mold, moisture and the home puts the practical window plainly: if wet or damp materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases mold will not grow. EPA's summary of the whole subject is that the key to mold control is moisture control. A finished wash cycle sitting in a closed drum is a wet material in a warm, dark, unventilated box. The clock is already running.

Drying conditions matter as much as drying speed. In a 2025 study in BMC Biology, Díez López and colleagues washed T-shirts and then dried them under two conditions for 72 hours: dry conditions (about 50% relative humidity, 24.5 °C) and humid conditions (about 80% relative humidity, 31.8 °C). The dry condition reduced the bacterial load on the fabric. The humid condition produced bacterial growth and worse odor. Same wash, same detergent, different air.

That study also found something worth sitting with: washing reduced the known malodor compounds on the fabric while the number of intact bacterial cells on it went up. A load can smell fine coming out of the machine and still be primed to smell later.

What to do about it:

  • Move the load out of the drum the same day. If you often forget, start the wash when you will be home to unload it, not on a delay timer overnight.
  • Dry in the driest air available. A closed bathroom with a wet floor is the worst indoor drying spot in most homes.
  • EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, and ideally between 30% and 50%. A fan, an open window or a dehumidifier does more for laundry odor than another scoop of anything.
  • Do not fold or stack anything that is still cool and slightly heavy. Fabric that feels "nearly dry" in a warm pile is the classic setup for a sour smell three days later.

Detergent Build-Up Trapped in the Fibers

Rinse water is not unlimited, and efficient machines use less of it. ENERGY STAR reports that full-sized washers that have earned the ENERGY STAR use 14 gallons of water per load, compared to the 20 gallons used by a standard machine, and that certified clothes washers use about 30% less water than regular washers. That is a comparison between certified and regular machines sold today, not between new machines and old ones. Either way, the less rinse water a cycle uses, the more a heavy dose can stay behind in the fabric instead of flushing away.

You can usually feel it before you smell it. Towels go stiff and stop absorbing. Dark cotton looks chalky. There are still suds in the drum during the final rinse. Fabric feels slightly slick when damp.

The fix is not a different detergent, it is a measured one. Free-pour bottles and scoops make it easy to overshoot. Two related things to rule out:

  • Overloading. A drum packed to the top cannot move water through the fabric, so nothing rinses properly. Leave room for the load to tumble.
  • Product that never dissolved. An undissolved pak leaves concentrated residue in one spot. If you are finding film, streaks or gel on clothes, treat that as a dissolving problem rather than a detergent-choice problem, and look at load size and how tightly the drum was packed before you change anything else.

Biofilm in the Gasket, Dispenser and Drain

If every load smells the same way, the machine is the source. Washers hold water in places you never see, and bacterial communities establish themselves there.

The numbers are not small. Jacksch and colleagues swabbed ten domestic washing machines at four sites — the detergent drawer, the drawer chamber, and the top and bottom of the rubber door seal — and reported an average bacterial load across all machines and sites of 2.1 × 10⁴ colony-forming units per square centimeter (Microorganisms, 2021). The top of the door seal was the least contaminated site at about 1.1 × 10² CFU/cm², which the authors attributed to it being less humid than the rest. They identified 29 genera and 40 species, most commonly Staphylococcus and Micrococcus, and concluded that both the drawer and the seal need cleaning on a regular basis.

For scale, Zinn, Flemming and Bockmühl compared washing machines with hand towels in normal use (Microorganisms, 2022). Towels after seven days of use carried on the order of 10² CFU/cm². Washing machine biofilms carried on the order of 10⁵ CFU/cm² — roughly a thousandfold difference. The machine is generally the bigger reservoir.

Two findings from this literature are worth stating honestly, because they cut against a simple "sterilize everything" story:

  • Seyednikkhoo, Weide and Egert sequenced machines that users described as odorous and machines they described as non-odorous (Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2026). Moraxella osloensis was relatively dominant in door seal samples in both groups, with no significant difference between them, and odor category was not a statistically significant predictor of bacterial abundance. Odorous machines trended toward higher bacterial DNA, but with heavy overlap. Load alone does not decide whether a machine smells.
  • Zinn and colleagues found soil bacteria — Rhizobium, Agrobacterium, Bosea and Microbacterium — specifically in non-odorous machines, and showed that Rhizobium species could prevent malodor formation in a laboratory model.

The practical takeaway is about moisture and mechanical cleaning, not disinfection theater:

  • Pull back the rubber door seal on a front loader and wipe inside the fold, all the way around. This is where standing water sits.
  • Remove the dispenser drawer if it comes out, and wash the drawer and its chamber. Both were sampled as high-load sites in the Jacksch study.
  • Check the drain pump filter, usually behind a small door at the bottom front. Your manual will say how often.
  • Run the machine's own tub clean or clean washer cycle at the interval the manufacturer specifies, using whatever that manual calls for.
  • Leave the door and the dispenser drawer open between washes so both dry out. Recall that the least contaminated site in the study was the one that stayed driest.

Towels: Why They Go First

Towels are the early warning system. They are thick, highly absorbent, and they go from a wet body onto a hook in a humid room — then into a hamper before they have fully dried, then into a heavy load that rinses poorly. Every risk factor stacks on the same item.

They also hold their history. Because Moraxella osloensis tolerates drying, a towel that dried out is not necessarily clean of the organisms that make it smell; the odor comes back the moment it is wet again. That is the towel that smells fine in the closet and unmistakable the second you use it.

One thing to settle before the steps below, because two of them sit next to each other and should not be read as one instruction: Love Brands specifies Love Paks for warm or cold water. Where this protocol talks about hotter washes, that is a fabric-hygiene measure drawn from the laundry-science literature and aimed at the towels, not a Love Brands temperature instruction and not something Love Brands claims for Love Paks.

To get a mildew smell out of towels, work in this order:

  1. Clean the machine first. Washing towels into a contaminated drum reseeds them. Do the gasket, drawer and clean cycle described above before the towel wash, not after.
  2. Wash towels alone, in a small load. Merettig and Bockmühl describe a wash process as being determined by four variables: temperature, mechanical action, chemistry and time (Pathogens, 2022). An overpacked drum removes the mechanical action. Half-fill it.
  3. Wash at the highest temperature the towel's care label allows. The same review notes that clinical and industrial laundering achieves hygiene through temperatures of at least 60 °C plus oxidizing agents, while domestic laundry is far less defined. Most cotton towel labels permit hot. Check yours: the wash symbol on the label gives the maximum temperature that fabric can take.
  4. Dose correctly — one pak, or two for a large or heavily soiled load. Do not add extra. More detergent in a low-water rinse is how you get residue, which is one of the things you are trying to remove.
  5. Consider an oxygen-bleach laundry booster if the fabric and label allow it, and follow that product's own directions. Brands, van Leuven and Bockmühl tested laundry processes at 20 °C, 30 °C and 40 °C against Candida species and Candidozyma auris (Pathogens, 2026) and found that maximum efficacy against the most resilient strain required a color powder detergent supplemented with a bleach-releasing additive at 40 °C. That result belongs to the exact system those authors tested — that powder detergent plus that bleach-releasing additive, at that temperature. It was not measured on Love Paks, it is about yeasts rather than odor, and it is offered here only to illustrate the general point that warmth plus oxidizing chemistry outperforms cold alone against stubborn organisms. Love Brands does not represent Love Paks as a disinfectant or a sanitizer.
  6. Run an extra rinse if the machine offers one.
  7. Dry fully, immediately, in moving air or a dryer. Do not stop at "almost dry."
  8. Judge the result only when the towel is completely dry and cool. Damp fabric always smells better than it is.

One habit worth testing: if you use fabric softener on towels, skip it for a few washes and see whether they dry faster and smell better. It costs nothing to try, and drying time is the variable that matters most.

If the smell returns within a load or two, the towels are not the problem. Go back to the machine.

A Reset Wash That Actually Works

Use this for a whole wardrobe that has gone musty, not just towels. It is the same logic, applied in order, and the order is what makes it work.

  1. Clean the machine before you wash anything. Gasket fold, dispenser drawer and chamber, drain pump filter, then the manufacturer's tub clean cycle. Skipping this step is why most reset attempts fail.
  2. Sort by what the labels allow, so you can run each group at its maximum permitted temperature rather than dropping everything to the temperature of the most delicate item.
  3. Halve your usual load size. You are buying mechanical action and rinse capacity.
  4. Dose to the load, not to the smell. One Love Pak for a standard load. Two for a large or heavily soiled load. That is the ceiling, not a starting point.
  5. Add an extra rinse.
  6. Unload the moment the cycle ends and dry completely without delay.
  7. Reassess when everything is dry and cool. Anything still off goes through once more before you conclude the item is finished.

Then keep the machine door open and repeat the machine cleaning on the manufacturer's schedule. A reset holds only if the reservoir stays clean.

What About Vinegar?

Household vinegar is a common home remedy for this problem, and the evidence for it is weaker than its reputation. Zinn and Bockmühl tested acetic acid across antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral standards (BMC Microbiology, 2020) and concluded that acetic acid does not have a disinfecting effect at the dosage commonly used for cleaning. The large reductions they measured needed much higher concentrations — 10% acetic acid with 1.5% citric acid in suspension tests, and 5% or more on surfaces. Ordinary white vinegar is around 5% before you dilute it in a drum full of water.

That does not make vinegar useless as a rinse aid, and some people like what it does to residue. It does mean you should not expect it to solve a mold or biofilm problem on its own. Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach, and follow your machine manufacturer's guidance on what may be run through it.

Four Habits That Prevent It Coming Back

  1. Unload the same day. EPA's 24-to-48-hour window is the whole argument, and unloading on time costs nothing.
  2. Dry in the driest air you can arrange. Díez López and colleagues showed a measurable difference between drying at about 50% relative humidity and about 80% over 72 hours: one lowered bacterial load, the other raised it and worsened odor. Ventilate, or use a dryer, or move the rack.
  3. Dose to the load every time. A pre-measured pak removes the daily judgment call, which is where over-dosing creeps in. Cold cycles rinse less aggressively, so accuracy matters more there — see washing cold without the mustiness for how to run cold cycles that stay fresh.
  4. Leave the door and drawer open, and wipe the gasket weekly. The driest site in the Jacksch study was also the cleanest. Airflow is free.

One addition if your household runs everything cold: put one warmer load through each week on items whose labels allow it — towels, bedding, kitchen cloths. Lower washing temperatures and reduced bleaching benefit the environment, but the Díez López paper is explicit that those conditions also impair microbial removal from clothing and contribute to malodor. A weekly warmer cycle is a reasonable middle position. To repeat the earlier point so it is not lost here: Love Brands specifies Love Paks for warm or cold water, so if a load calls for hotter than warm, that is a fabric-hygiene decision to make with whatever product suits that wash, not a Love Paks instruction.

When Scent Is Masking the Problem Instead of Solving It

Here is the distinction that matters. Perfume changes what you smell. It does not change the moisture, the residue or the biofilm producing the smell. A related finding makes the same distinction measurable, even though it is about washing rather than perfuming: in the BMC Biology study above, washing lowered the measured malodor compounds while the intact bacterial load on the fabric increased. Smelling better and being cleaner are not the same measurement.

Three signs you are masking rather than fixing:

  • The fresh smell fades and the old smell returns underneath it, in the same order, every time.
  • The odor is strongest when the fabric gets wet or warm again — in the shower, in a jacket, in bed.
  • You have increased the amount of scented product and the interval before the smell returns has not changed.

If any of those describe your laundry, more fragrance is the wrong lever. Work the moisture and the machine first, then decide what you want your laundry to smell like.
