What Is Rose Quartz? The Story Behind Our Laundry Paks
Rose quartz is a color variety of quartz with a long documented history, a well-studied cause of color, and a large body of belief attached to it. Those three things are not the same, and most writing about rose quartz blurs them together. This page keeps them apart.

What rose quartz actually is, mineralogically
Scientifically demonstrated.
Quartz is silicon dioxide, SiO2 — one silicon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms, repeated in a tetrahedral lattice. It is one of the most common minerals in the Earth's continental crust, and it is the reference point for hardness 7 on the Mohs scale. The U.S. National Park Service lists the full scale as talc 1, gypsum 2, calcite 3, fluorite 4, apatite 5, orthoclase 6, quartz 7, topaz 8, corundum 9, diamond 10, with a steel nail at about 6.5 and a knife or glass plate at about 5.5 for comparison.
Rose quartz is not a separate mineral species. It is a color variety of quartz — the same SiO2, with something extra inside it. That distinction matters, because the pink is not a property of the quartz.
One more point that gets lost: almost all rose quartz on the market is massive rose quartz, meaning a solid aggregate of many small, randomly oriented crystal domains rather than one well-formed crystal. Goreva, Ma and Rossman, writing in American Mineralogist in 2001, note that massive rose quartz "occurs most commonly in granitic pegmatites and sometimes in massive hydrothermal veins," and that the pink fibers they studied "do not occur in the rare, euhedral variety of pink quartz." A tumbled rose quartz stone is an aggregate, not a cut crystal plate. That becomes important further down.
Where it comes from and why it is pink
Scientifically demonstrated.
The cause of rose quartz's color was argued over for most of the twentieth century. It was settled in 2001 by Julia S. Goreva, Chi Ma and George R. Rossman at the California Institute of Technology, in a paper titled "Fibrous nanoinclusions in massive rose quartz: The origin of rose coloration," published in American Mineralogist, volume 86, pages 466–472.
Their method was direct: dissolve the quartz away and see what is left. The samples were ground, then dissolved in hot concentrated hydrofluoric acid. As the paper reports, "All 29 massive quartz samples produced an insoluble fibrous residue," amounting to between 50 and 150 parts per million of the starting sample weight. In the abstract's words: "Pink nanofibers were extracted from rose quartz from 29 different pegmatitic and massive vein localities throughout the world. Their width varied from 0.1 to 0.5 μm."
One specimen behaved differently, and the difference is informative. The single-crystal pink quartz sample dissolved entirely, leaving no fibrous residue at all — consistent with the finding that these fibers are absent from the rare euhedral form.
The findings that matter:
- The inclusions cause the color. The team concluded "these nanofibrous inclusions are the cause of coloration of massive rose quartz worldwide."
- The mechanism is a charge transfer. "Redox and heating experiments showed that the pink color of the fibers is due to Fe-Ti intervalence charge transfer that produces an optical absorption band at 500 nm." Iron and titanium exchange charge; the resulting absorption band takes a bite out of the green part of the spectrum; what reaches your eye reads as pink.
- In 2001 the fiber was dumortierite-like, but not confirmed as dumortierite. "Based on the XRD patterns and characteristics of pleochroism, the best match for these inclusions is dumortierite. However, FTIR and Raman spectra consistently did not exactly match the standard dumortierite patterns, suggesting that this fibrous nano-phase may not be dumortierite itself, but rather a closely related material."
- The color is heat-sensitive. The same paper notes earlier work by Ignatov and colleagues, published in 1990, in which the color of rose quartz was lost at about 500 °C.
The following year the same three authors answered their own open question. Chi Ma, Julia S. Goreva and George R. Rossman published "Fibrous nanoinclusions in massive rose quartz: HRTEM and AEM investigations" in American Mineralogist, volume 87, pages 269–276, in 2002. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and analytical electron microscopy on samples from California, South Dakota, Brazil, Madagascar and Namibia, they report that "the nanofibers in all samples are related to dumortierite," and that the fibers carry "a superstructure with a doubled periodicity along the a and b axes of dumortierite." So the answer is: close to dumortierite, with a doubled superstructure, but not plain dumortierite.
The 29 localities sampled span Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, South Dakota, Montana, California, New York, Arizona, Nevada, the Ural Mountains in Russia, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Norway, Finland, Greenland, Germany and China. Rose quartz is a genuinely global material, mostly out of granitic pegmatites.
A stone people have kept close for thousands of years
Historical fact.
The Goreva paper opens by noting that the rose variety of quartz "is known and valued from time immemorial as an item of beauty, a source of rock for decorative carvings, and as a jewelry stone." The gemological record is more specific.
According to the Gemological Institute of America's account of rose quartz history and lore:
- "Rose quartz beads dating back to 7000 BC have been found in the area once known as Mesopotamia (today's Iraq)."
- "Rose quartz jewelry was known to be crafted by the Assyrians around 800-600 BC."
- "The Romans used rose quartz as a seal to signify ownership, and Egyptians believed the stone could prevent aging."
- "In the Middle Ages, medical practitioners used quartz in their healing potions. Early cultures of the Americas used quartz amulets."
Read those carefully. "Egyptians believed the stone could prevent aging" is a record of what people believed. It is not a finding about what the mineral does. The same applies to medieval healing potions. The historical record tells you that humans have consistently found this stone worth carrying — it does not tell you the stone did anything.
So what is rose quartz used for?
In practice: jewelry, beads, carvings, decorative objects, tumbled palm stones and ornamental stone. That is the honest list. Industrial quartz applications — oscillators, filters, optics — use cultured quartz grown in a lab to a controlled specification, not rose quartz dug out of a pegmatite.
What crystal practice associates with rose quartz — and why that is belief, not evidence
Cultural belief.
Modern crystal practice associates rose quartz with love, compassion, self-acceptance and the heart — and specifically with anahata, the heart chakra. That association is real as a cultural fact: it is what a large number of people believe and practice today. It is also traceable, and the history is more recent than most people assume.
Chakras come from Indian tantric and yogic traditions. The version most Western readers know — seven chakras, arranged in rainbow order, each paired with a color and a stone — was largely assembled in the West. Theosophical writers were central to that transmission: H. P. Blavatsky, who co-founded the Theosophical Society and moved to India in 1879, and after her the Theosophist C. W. Leadbeater, whose book The Chakras appeared in 1927. Pairing each chakra with a single spectrum color is a twentieth-century Western development rather than a feature of the older Indian texts.
None of that makes the practice illegitimate. It makes it a practice, with a documented lineage, rather than a measured property of a mineral.
What happens when the association is tested
It has been tested. Christopher French and colleagues at the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London, ran a controlled comparison in which participants meditated holding either genuine quartz or a placebo stone they could not distinguish from quartz. Participants reported the characteristic sensations at similar rates whichever stone they had been given. The work was presented at the British Psychological Society's centenary annual conference in 2001, and the researchers' conclusion was that there is no evidence crystal healing works beyond a placebo effect.
Love Brands is not going to argue with that finding, and we do not build product claims on top of it. We say plainly: rose quartz in a Love Pak is not there to do something to you.
Resonance in a mineral is physics; effects on a person are not
Scientifically demonstrated — with a hard boundary at the end of it.
This is where most rose quartz writing goes wrong, so it is worth being exact. Quartz does have real, measurable frequencies. There are two completely different kinds, and neither one is "the frequency of rose quartz."
1. Lattice vibrations, measured in terahertz
Every crystal's atoms vibrate about their positions, at frequencies set by bond stiffness and atomic mass. Raman spectroscopy measures these directly, and mineralogists use them as fingerprints — the Goreva team ran Raman spectra on both quartz and dumortierite as part of identifying the pink fibers.
Quartz's strongest Raman band sits at about 464 cm-1. Kidman and colleagues, writing in Small Methods in 2026, describe it as an "A1‐symmetry vibrational mode involving the bending or rotational motion of the SiO4 tetrahedra, specifically the symmetric stretching of Si─O─Si bridging oxygen bonds."
Multiply that wavenumber by the speed of light and you get roughly 13.9 terahertz — about 13,900,000,000,000 cycles per second. That is nowhere near the audible range, nowhere near any number you will see quoted as a "crystal frequency," and it is a property of quartz generally, not of the pink variety.
2. Mechanical resonance of a cut plate, measured in hertz
This is the one people are actually thinking of. Quartz is piezoelectric: Pierre and Jacques Curie demonstrated in 1880 that certain crystals, quartz among them, develop a surface charge under mechanical stress, and the following year that the effect runs in reverse.
NIST describes the working principle: "The crystal strains (expands or contracts) when an electrical voltage is applied. When the voltage is reversed, the strain is reversed. This is known as the piezoelectric effect." And then the sentence that answers the whole question: "The rate of expansion and contraction is the resonance frequency, and is determined by the cut and size of the crystal."
Determined by the cut and size of the crystal. A watch crystal runs at 32,768 Hz because a manufacturer cut and trimmed it to run at 32,768 Hz — a number chosen because halving it fifteen times gives exactly one pulse per second. Change the cut, change the frequency. The mineral does not supply the number; the machining does.
Does rose quartz have a frequency?
There is no single frequency for rose quartz. Two reasons:
- A quartz resonator's frequency is a property of how the plate was cut and sized, not of the mineral. Two plates from the same crystal run at different frequencies if they are cut differently.
- Massive rose quartz — the kind sold as tumbled stones and used in products — is an aggregate of many randomly oriented domains. It is not a single-crystal plate cut on a defined axis, so it does not behave as an engineered resonator at all.
You will find specific hertz figures attached to rose quartz across the internet. Those numbers are not measured mineral properties, and Love Brands does not publish one.
A note on the word "frequency"
Aura Frequency Starter Pack is the name of a separate product in the Love Brands range. "Frequency" there is a product name. It is not a claim that rose quartz emits, tunes or carries a frequency, and nothing on this page should be read that way. The cleaning in a Love Pak is done by the plant-based formula.

Rose quartz is not a cleaning agent, not a softener, not a brightener and not a stain remover, and we do not present it as one. It is in the product because Love Brands was built around the idea that an object you touch every week can be made deliberately rather than carelessly. Some people find that meaningful. Some people buy Love Paks purely because they want a pre-measured plant-based pak and are indifferent to the stone. Both are fine, and the detergent performs identically either way.

How many paks per load

Is rose quartz safe to put in a washing machine?
This question has two different answers depending on what you mean.
A loose rose quartz stone in the drum: don't. A tumbled stone is a hard object rattling around inside a metal drum, and it is the same category of problem as coins, keys and buttons — the ordinary advice to empty your pockets before washing exists for a reason. Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale; the National Park Service comparison list puts a steel nail at about 6.5 and a knife or glass plate at about 5.5. Loose quartz is harder than the things it would be knocking against. Love Brands does not recommend putting stones in your washing machine.
Using Love Paks: yes, as directed. A Love Pak is a pre-measured detergent pak that dissolves during the wash cycle. It is stated for standard and HE machines, in warm or cold water. You are not dropping a rock into your appliance.
Handling and storage
Handle paks with dry hands, keep the pouch closed, and store it up and out of the reach of children. This is standard handling guidance for concentrated laundry paks.
Working out your cost per load
Prices change, so here is the arithmetic instead of a number. A pouch contains 39 paks, and one pak does a standard load — so cost per load = pouch price ÷ 39. Multi-pouch bundles change the pouch price but not the arithmetic: total price ÷ total paks.
What to expect
Clean laundry, from the formula. Scent if you chose Citrus Flower Blossom, or no added fragrance if you chose Dye & Scent Free. A stone in the pouch that is there because we chose to put it there. Nothing beyond that is promised, and you should be suspicious of any laundry product that promises more.
