How Much Should You Spend on Laundry Each Month?
Your monthly laundry budget is one multiplication: loads per week × 4.3 weeks × cost per load. Cost per load is the sum of four things — detergent, water and sewer, the washer's own electricity, and drying. ENERGY STAR puts the average American family at "about 300 loads of laundry each year," which is roughly 5.8 loads a week. Almost everything that makes two households differ is the load count and the dryer, not the detergent aisle.
This guide walks the arithmetic in three steps, then gives worked monthly budgets for one person, a couple, a family of four and a large household. It uses federal figures for the inputs and tells you exactly where to find your own. It does not quote a price for any product, because prices change and a budget built on a stale sticker price is worse than no budget at all. When you want the live figures, run your own numbers.
The four costs in every load: detergent, water, machine energy, drying
Only one of the four is printed on a shelf label. The other three come off your utility bill and the yellow EnergyGuide sticker on your machines. That is why most people underestimate laundry: they budget the detergent and ignore three lines that, together, usually cost more.

Two notes before the arithmetic. First, sewer is not optional. Many US utilities bill sewer as a function of metered water. Check your bill — if yours does, every gallon your washer draws is charged twice. Second, if your building or landlord bundles water into rent, your water line is zero to you and the dryer line dominates completely.
Step one: count your real loads per week
This is the number with the most leverage, and it is the one people guess worst. Do not estimate it. Count it for two full weeks, including towels, bedding and the small emergency load, then divide by two.
For a reference point, ENERGY STAR — the energy-efficiency program administered by the US Environmental Protection Agency — states that "the average American family washes about 300 loads of laundry each year." Divide by 52 and that is about 5.8 loads a week. That average covers every household size at once, so treat it as a sanity check, not as your number.
To go from weeks to months, multiply by 4.3. There are 52 weeks in 12 months, so a month averages 4.33 weeks — using 4 undercounts your year by about a month's worth of laundry.

Step two: your detergent cost per load
The only honest way to compare detergents is cost per load, and the formula is the same for every format:
Detergent cost per load = container price ÷ number of doses in the container
The trap is the second half. A liquid bottle's dose count depends on the cap line you actually use, which is why liquid is the hardest format to budget accurately. Pre-measured formats remove that variable: the dose count is fixed by the manufacturer, so the per-load figure is arithmetic rather than an estimate.

- Standard load: current pouch price ÷ 39.
- Large or heavily soiled load: that figure × 2.

What the premium tier actually buys — and how to talk about rose quartz
Detergent sits in price tiers, and a budget is the right place to be blunt about what a higher tier does and does not include. What each detergent price tier buys covers the general case. Love Paks are rose quartz infused, which is unusual on a detergent shelf, so it is worth separating four different kinds of statement before you decide what it is worth to you:
- Historical fact. Rose quartz is the pink variety of quartz, a silicon dioxide mineral, and it has been carved and worn as an ornamental stone since antiquity.
- Cultural belief. A number of traditions associate rose quartz with love and care. That is a belief people hold. It is not a finding, and nothing on this page treats it as one.

Budget takeaway: put the premium tier in your spreadsheet as a cost per load like any other, decide whether the scent, the format and the brand's give-back program are worth that number to you, and do not let a story about a stone stand in for the arithmetic.
Step three: utilities per load, and why the dryer dominates
Three lines here. Each one has a formula and a place you can look up your own input.
Water and sewer
ENERGY STAR states that "full-sized washers that have earned the ENERGY STAR use 14 gallons of water per load, compared to the 20 gallons used by a standard machine." Take your own bill and find the volumetric rate for water and the one for sewer, then add them. Many US utilities bill in CCF, where one CCF is 100 cubic feet, or 748 gallons — divide the CCF rate by 748 to get dollars per gallon.
Water cost per load = gallons per load × (water rate + sewer rate) per gallon
For scale: the EPA's WaterSense program reports that "the average family spends more than $1,000 per year in water costs" across all household uses, not laundry alone.
The washer's own electricity
Take this one off your washer's yellow EnergyGuide label, which gives an estimated yearly kWh figure. Divide it by the number of cycles you actually run in a year — step one gives you that — and multiply by your electricity rate.
Wash electricity per load = EnergyGuide yearly kWh ÷ your cycles per year × your rate
Do not try to back this number out of the efficiency rating instead, which is a common and expensive mistake. ENERGY STAR rates clothes washers by Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF), in cubic feet per kWh per cycle, and its Key Product Criteria define IMEF as the capacity of the clothes container, C, divided by the total per-cycle energy consumption — the sum of the machine electrical energy M, the hot water energy E, "the energy required for removal of the remaining moisture in the wash load, D," and the combined low-power mode energy L. That is IMEF = C ÷ (M + E + D + L). So capacity ÷ IMEF is the total energy of the test cycle including a moisture-removal component. It is not a wash-only figure, and adding a separate dryer line on top of it counts the drying twice.
It is still useful as a bound. Every term in that denominator is non-negative, so capacity ÷ IMEF is a ceiling on the washer's own electricity and hot water together. A 4.5 cubic foot front-loader sitting exactly at the certification threshold of IMEF 2.76 gives 4.5 ÷ 2.76 = 1.63 kWh of total test-cycle energy, so at 18.34 cents per kWh its wash line has to fall below about $0.30 a load — below, not at, because that same 1.63 kWh also contains the moisture-removal and low-power terms. To earn the label, a full-size front-loader needs IMEF ≥ 2.76 and a full-size top-loader IMEF ≥ 2.06.
Hot water energy, E, is one of the four terms in that denominator, which is why wash temperature moves this line. Washing cold lands you materially below the label number. Drying, and why it is usually the biggest utility line
Drying is the only step that has to evaporate every drop of water out of the whole load, every time. Nothing else in the cycle does physical work on that scale, which is why it tends to top the utility column.
ENERGY STAR rates dryers by Combined Energy Factor (CEF), in pounds of laundry dried per kWh. A standard-size vented or ventless electric dryer needs CEF ≥ 3.93 to earn the label. Because CEF is pounds per kWh, energy is pounds ÷ CEF, and a higher CEF means less energy: an eight-pound load takes at most about 8 ÷ 3.93 ≈ 2.0 kWh on a certified machine, and more on an older one. Two caveats on that eight pounds. It is your assumption, not the test's — ENERGY STAR's standard-size CEF test load is 8.45 lbs. And the CEF denominator covers machine electric energy use during standby as well as operational cycles, so it is not purely the heat that dries the clothes. ENERGY STAR also notes that "heat pump dryers use around 70% less energy than a conventional clothes dryers."
Multiply kWh by your electricity rate. The US Energy Information Administration's Electric Power Monthly put the US average residential retail price at 18.34 cents per kWh in June 2026. Your own rate is on your bill, and in many states it is well above or below that.
The utility column, worked
Below is an illustration, not a quote. Every input is either a cited federal figure or a placeholder you should replace with your own. The water rate in particular is a stand-in: $15 per 1,000 gallons combined water and sewer, or $0.015 per gallon. The washer line is deliberately left blank, because no published certification criterion hands you a wash-only per-cycle number — only your EnergyGuide label does.

Then add your washer line on top. For the 4.5 cubic foot front-loader described above it cannot exceed about $0.30 a load, so tumble-dried utilities for that pair of machines land somewhere between $0.58 and $0.88 per load. Your EnergyGuide label is what places it inside that band.
Detergent is deliberately not in that table either. Add it as its own line, from step two.
Worked budgets: one person, couple, family of four, large household
These use the utility subtotals above — which exclude the washer's own electricity — and two detergent scenarios, $0.50 and $1.00 per load, to bracket the range. Substitute your own detergent figure and your own rates; the point is the structure, not the totals.

Add your washer's own electricity to every figure in the last three columns. At the ceiling derived above — under about $0.30 a load — that is at most $2.58 more a month for one person, $3.87 for a couple, $7.74 for a family of four and $12.90 for the large household.
Read the two ends of that family-of-four row carefully. The gap between $27.86 and $40.76 is entirely the detergent choice. The gap between $14.96 and $5.42 is entirely the dryer. Same house, same clothes.
Run the same arithmetic on ENERGY STAR's 300-load average family and the year comes to about $174 in utilities before the washer line, plus $150–$300 in detergent — roughly $324 to $474 a year on this set of assumptions, plus a washer line that cannot exceed about $90 at the ceiling above. That is a derived figure, not a survey result. We could not find an official federal figure for total household laundry cost including utilities.
Where the budget leaks: rewashing, over-dosing, half-empty loads
Leaks are cheap to fix because they add loads or add doses without adding clean clothes.
- Rewashing. A rewash is a 100% surcharge on that load — full detergent, full water, full dryer cycle. The two usual causes are a load that came out smelling stale and a load that came out with residue on it. - Over-dosing. Free-pouring liquid is a budget line you cannot forecast, and excess detergent is a common cause of residue, which causes rewashing, which costs a whole extra load. Pre-measured paks remove the variable outright: one pak per standard load, two for large or heavily soiled. Nothing beyond that.
- Half-empty loads. A partly filled drum spreads roughly the same fixed water and energy over fewer garments, so your cost per garment climbs even though the cost per load looks unchanged. Consolidating two half loads into one full one removes a whole load from the month.
- The extras you forgot to budget. Dryer sheets, scent boosters, stain sprays and fabric softener are a separate supplies line. Price each one per load the same way you priced detergent, then decide whether it earns its place.

Five changes that move the number, ranked by impact
Ranked by how much each one moves the illustration above, for a family of four at 25.8 loads a month.
- Line dry some loads. Removes the largest utility line in the illustration — up to about $0.37 per load, or roughly $9.55 a month if you line dry every load. Even doing it for towels and bedding in summer is real money.
- Wash cold. Hot water energy is one of the four terms in the IMEF denominator, so temperature is the lever on the washer line. Love Paks work in warm or cold water; choosing for cold water covers what to look for generally.
- Fill the drum properly. Fewer, fuller loads means fewer of every line item at once — detergent, water, wash energy and dryer time all drop together.
- Fix the dose. Switch the dosing question from a judgement call to a fixed quantity. One pak per standard load, two for large or heavily soiled. This is worth more than it looks because it also removes the residue-and-rewash loop.
- Buy on cost per load, not sticker price. Divide by doses before you compare anything. This ranks last only because it moves a smaller line than the dryer — but it is the change that stops you re-making the same mistake every month. Note what is not on that list: buying a new machine. A more efficient washer or a heat pump dryer genuinely lowers the per-load lines, but the purchase is a capital decision on a multi-year payback, not a monthly budget change. Keep it in a different column.
Laundromat and in-building machines: a different math entirely
If you pay per cycle, throw out the four-line model. You are not buying gallons and kilowatt-hours — you are buying a machine start, at a fixed price, no matter how full the drum is.
Cost per load = price of one wash cycle + price of a full dry + your detergent cost per load
Three things change once the price is fixed per start:
- Fullness becomes the whole game. A half-empty machine costs exactly the same as a full one, so under-loading is a straight loss. Cost per pound, not cost per load, is the number to optimize.
- Machine size changes the per-pound price. Compare the price of one large-capacity start against two small starts on the price ladder at your location before you split a load.
- Dryers are sold in timed increments, and over-drying is invisible. Buying one more block of time than the load needs is the most common laundromat overspend. Under-buying is worse — it forces a second block.
Bring your own detergent rather than buying single doses from a vending machine. Single-dose detergent from a vending machine is priced per dose, so run the same container-price ÷ doses arithmetic on it before you buy. Pre-measured paks travel well for exactly this reason; travel and small-space laundry covers the practicalities.
If you use in-building machines, check whether laundry is bundled into your rent, HOA dues or a flat utility fee. If it is, your marginal cost per load is just detergent, and the "fill the drum" advice loses most of its force.
