Two consequences follow, and both matter more than any detergent choice:
- Your January cold wash is not your July cold wash. A 20 °F swing in fill temperature is a real change in cleaning conditions. Most complaints that "cold water doesn't work" are seasonal.
- Many machines quietly blend in hot water. Automatic temperature control will pull warm water into a cold cycle when the tap runs very cold, so the setting you chose is not always the wash you got. Some machines offer a separate Tap Cold or Coldest option that does not blend.

- Colors and dark fabrics. Less dye leaves the fabric at lower temperature, so garments hold their color longer.
- Synthetics, knits and delicates. Lace, silk and most elastane blends do better without heat. Cold also reduces shrinkage and set-in wrinkles.
- Protein stains — blood, sweat, egg, milk. Heat cooks protein into the fiber. GE Appliances puts it plainly: "blood and sweat can actually set into fabric in hot water." Rinse and wash these cold, always.
- Everyday lightly soiled clothing. Shirts worn one day, jeans, bedding without illness in the house, towels in normal use.
There is also published evidence that cooler, shorter cycles are gentler on the garment itself. A University of Leeds study published in Dyes and Pigments in January 2020 compared a 30-minute cycle at 25 °C against an 85-minute cycle at 40 °C, both at 1,600 rpm, over 16 repeat washes. The researchers reported that the quicker, cooler cycle reduced microfiber release by up to 52% and dye release by up to 74% (University of Leeds). Worth noting for context: two of the co-authors worked at a detergent manufacturer's research center. The finding is peer-reviewed, and you should still read it knowing who funded the bench time.
What cold water does not do: sanitizing, grease and set-in soil
No, it is not fine to wash literally everything in cold. Four honest limits:
1. Cold does not sanitize
The CDC's infection-control guidance states that "a temperature of at least 160 °F (71 °C) for a minimum of 25 minutes is commonly recommended for hot-water washing," and that lower-temperature laundering "relies heavily on the presence of chlorine- or oxygen-activated bleach to reduce the levels of microbial contamination" (CDC).
Read that in context. It is healthcare laundry guidance, written for hospitals, not a rule for your bath towels — and the DOE recommends setting a household water heater to 120 °F, well below that (DOE Energy Saver). But the underlying chemistry is the same: if your goal is microbial reduction rather than cleanliness, temperature and bleach are what do it, and a cold cycle with any detergent is not the tool. CDC also notes that the heat of drying and ironing adds meaningful microbiocidal action.
2. Cold struggles with grease and oily soil
Warm water softens or melts fats so a surfactant can lift them off the fiber. Cold water does not, and surfactant chemistry itself runs slower at lower temperature. Cooking fats, motor oil and heavy body oils are deposited as liquids, then solidify and grip the fiber — the hardest case for a cold cycle. Kitchen aprons, bacon-splashed tea towels and mechanic's overalls belong in warm or hot.
3. Cold is the wrong choice for chemically contaminated work clothes
North Dakota State University Extension is explicit for pesticide-contaminated clothing: use hot water, wash those items separately, and do not treat cold as adequate (NDSU Agriculture). The same logic applies to any garment carrying an oily chemical residue.
4. Very cold tap water degrades any detergent's performance
This is the seasonal problem again. GE Appliances puts the threshold at 40 °F or lower — winter tap temperature in cold-weather states — and warns that detergents may not perform well there (GE Appliances). In a cold climate in February, "warm" is a reasonable default even for a household committed to cold the rest of the year.
One maintenance note that gets lost in cold-water advice: a machine that only ever runs cold can accumulate residue in the drum, gasket and dispenser. Check your manual — most manufacturers specify a periodic clean-washer or tub-clean cycle, and running it matters more when you have stopped washing hot.
Why detergent choice matters more in cold water than in hot
Heat does three jobs in a wash: it melts fats, it speeds up every chemical reaction in the drum, and it helps ingredients dissolve. Take the heat away and the detergent has to carry all three. That is the entire reason "cold-water detergent" exists as a category.

Treat that as arithmetic you can check, not as your bill. It assumes a full hot fill, ignores water-heater efficiency, standby loss and heat lost in the pipes, and says nothing about gas versus electric rates. Substitute your own machine's fill volume, your own winter and summer tap temperatures and your own utility rate, and you will get a figure that is actually about your house.
