Cold vs Warm vs Hot: What Temperature to Wash Clothes
Cold water handles most household laundry. Warm is the sensible middle for everyday cottons. Hot is a tool for two jobs — sanitizing and cutting grease — and those two jobs cover five kinds of load, listed further down. Hot is not a default setting.
Before the chart, here are the two things a cold wash genuinely cannot do:
- A cold wash does not sanitize. It removes soil and carries microorganisms down the drain, but it does not reliably kill bacteria, and it does not kill dust mites. That takes heat, or a product made to sanitize.
- A cold wash struggles with oily and greasy soil. ENERGY STAR puts it plainly: "Unless you're dealing with oily stains, washing in cold water will generally do a good job of cleaning."

What temperature each setting actually is on a US machine
Most US washing machines do not heat water. The temperature dial blends the hot and cold supply already coming from your household plumbing. Some machines do have an internal heater, usually attached to a Sanitize, Allergen or Steam cycle — your manual will say.
That means "cold" is not a fixed temperature. It is whatever your cold tap delivers on that day, which drops in winter, varies by region, and varies between a first-floor laundry and a basement one.
For a reference point, the US Department of Energy's uniform test method for clothes washers (10 CFR Part 430, Subpart B, Appendix J2) specifies the supply conditions used in the lab: "Maintain the temperature of the hot water supply at the water inlets between 130 °F (54.4 °C) and 135 °F (57.2 °C)" and "Maintain the temperature of the cold water supply at the water inlets between 55 °F (12.8 °C) and 60 °F (15.6 °C)." The test procedure defines no separate warm supply — warm is produced by opening both.
Those are laboratory supply conditions, not a promise about your house. Your cold is whatever your plumbing delivers that day. Your warm is a blend of the two supplies, so it lands somewhere between them. Your hot is capped by your water heater's setting and by heat lost along the pipe run — the dial cannot deliver water hotter than what arrives at the machine. The only way to know your own three numbers is to measure them.
How to check your own machine in two minutes
- Run the cold tap at the laundry sink or the nearest faucet for 30 seconds.
- Hold a kitchen or candy thermometer in the stream and take the reading.
- Repeat with the hot tap, giving it a full minute to run through.
- Write both numbers down, then check again in the opposite season. Your winter cold may be well below your summer cold.
If your hot tap tops out below 130°F, no "hot" cycle on that machine will exceed it either — unless the machine has its own heater.
Wash cold: colors, synthetics, delicates, protein stains
Colors and anything that might bleed dye. Heat speeds up dye release from fabric. University of Leeds researchers measured dye loss on a shorter, cooler cycle against a longer, hotter one — see the cycle-length section below for what that comparison can and cannot tell you.
Synthetics: polyester, nylon, elastane, activewear. Stretch fibers do not tolerate heat well, which is why the care label on most activewear specifies cold or warm. Follow it.
Delicates, wool and silk. Cold plus a gentle cycle, unless the care label says otherwise. Hot water and agitation are what felt and shrink wool.
Protein stains: blood, sweat, milk, egg, baby formula, vomit. Treat these in cold water first. Heat coagulates the protein into the fibers — the same reaction that firms an egg white — and once that has happened, the mark is far harder to lift. The standard practice for a protein stain is cold water first, never hot, and keeping the item out of the dryer until the stain is gone, because dryer heat sets it too.
Wash warm: everyday cottons and moderately soiled loads
Warm is the middle setting that most people under-use. It suits:
- Everyday cottons: t-shirts, jeans, socks, underwear, pajamas
- Whites and light cottons that have started to look dull on cold
- Bath towels in a household with no illness or allergy concern
- Moderately soiled work clothes with no grease in them
- Sheets, for most households, on a normal week
Warm is also the correct fallback when a cold wash left something visibly dingy. Move that load up one step rather than jumping straight to hot.
The energy arithmetic is worth knowing. ENERGY STAR states that "Water heating consumes about 90% of the energy it takes to operate a clothes washer," and that "Switching your temperature setting from hot to warm can cut energy use in half. Using the cold cycle reduces energy use even more." That is a general figure about washing machines from ENERGY STAR, not a Love Brands measurement.
Wash hot: sanitizing, grease and heavy soil
If you are asking which of your loads actually still need hot water, this is the whole list:
- Laundry from someone who is sick, or any item soiled with vomit, feces, blood or other body fluids.
- Bedding, when someone in the household has a dust mite allergy. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America advises: "Wash your sheets, blankets, and throw rugs weekly in hot water… Wash them in water that's at least 130° F or more to kill dust mites."
- Cloth diapers and the wipes and covers that go with them.
- Kitchen towels and cloths that have handled raw meat, plus cleaning rags.
- Greasy or oily soil: cooking oil, motor oil, greasy work uniforms, heavily soiled shop clothes.
That is it. Everything not on that list is a candidate for cold or warm.
One point to be clear about, since those five categories are the hot ones: Love Paks by Love Brands are made for use in warm or cold water. This page is not telling you to run Love Paks hot. What hot water costs you
- It sets protein stains permanently
- It accelerates dye loss and fading
- It shrinks cotton and can felt wool
- It is hard on elastane, silk and most performance fabrics
- It is the most energy-intensive setting on the dial
There is also a ceiling you do not control. A hot cycle can only be as hot as your water heater delivers. If yours is set for scald safety, the machine may never reach 130°F on tap water alone. Machines with a Sanitize or Allergen cycle get past that with an internal heater — check your manual.
Does cold water kill germs, bacteria or dust mites?
No, not reliably. Washing is mostly a removal process — detergent lifts soil and microorganisms off the fabric, agitation loosens them, and the rinse carries them away. Killing them is a separate job done by heat or by chemistry.
The temperature at which laundering is treated as a disinfection step is far above anything a home tap produces. The CDC's guidance for healthcare laundry states that "A temperature of at least 160°F (71°C) for a minimum of 25 minutes is commonly recommended for hot-water washing." A residential washer running on household hot water will not get there.
Cooler washing can reduce microbial load, but the CDC frames it as a controlled process, not a home default: "Several studies have demonstrated that lower water temperatures of 71°F–77°F (22°C–25°C) can reduce microbial contamination when the cycling of the washer, the wash detergent, and the amount of laundry additive are carefully monitored and controlled." That describes a commercial laundry with measured chemistry — not a cold cycle at home with detergent alone.
None of which makes ordinary cold-water laundry a hygiene problem. The CDC also notes that "Infection has not been linked to laundry procedures in residential-care facilities, even when consumer versions of detergents and laundry additives are used." For everyday clothes, cold is fine. It simply is not sanitizing, and it should not be described as if it were.
Dust mites are a temperature question, not a detergent question. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's threshold is water "at least 130° F or more." If your machine cannot reach 130°F, that guidance is not being met — no detergent substitutes for the heat.
When you genuinely need to sanitize a load and cannot get the water hot enough, the options are your machine's Sanitize cycle, if it has one, or a dedicated laundry sanitizer or disinfectant used exactly as its own label directs. Never mix bleach with other laundry products.

Towels, sheets and gym clothes: the three loads people get wrong
Towels
Warm is enough for most households. Move to hot when someone is ill, or when a towel has picked up grease.
If your towels smell musty, temperature is usually not the fix. That smell tends to come from towels left damp in the drum, loads packed too tightly to rinse properly, too much product, or buildup in the machine's gasket and drum. Work through those first.
Sheets
Cold or warm is appropriate for most households on a normal week. The 130°F weekly recommendation is specifically the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's advice for people managing a dust mite allergy — it is not a general cleanliness rule for everyone. Decide which situation you are in, then set the dial accordingly.
Gym clothes
Cold, almost always. These are the synthetics that heat damages fastest, and the care label on most activewear says so.
What actually helps a gym load is not temperature:
- Wash promptly — don't leave kit sealed in a bag overnight
- Turn garments inside out so the soiled surface faces the water
- Don't overload; the load needs room to move
- Check the care label before using any fabric softener — many activewear makers advise against it
- Use the right amount of detergent for the load size, not more
Shorter, cooler cycles and how long garments last
There is measured evidence on this. A study led by Dr. Lucy Cotton, with Dr. Richard Blackburn of the University of Leeds School of Design and Dr. Adam Hayward and Dr. Neil Lant of P&G's Newcastle Innovation Centre, was published in the journal Dyes and Pigments on 14 January 2020.
The researchers compared a 30-minute cycle at 25°C against an 85-minute cycle at 40°C, both at 1,600 rpm spin. The University of Leeds reports that the quicker, cooler cycle reduced microfiber release by up to 52% and dye release by up to 74%.
Three caveats, because this result is quoted carelessly a lot.
First, the two variables moved together. The short cycle was also the cool one, and the long cycle was also the hot one. Nothing in that design separates the effect of lower heat from the effect of less time in the drum. Leeds describes the finding as "reducing both washing cycle length and water temperature." So the 74% is not a heat-alone number, and nobody — including Love Brands — can honestly present it as one.
Second, those are European machine settings in Celsius. 25°C is about 77°F and 40°C is about 104°F, so the comparison is roughly "cold-ish" against "warm," not cold against hot as a US dial would read it.
Third, the disclosure. The University of Leeds states that the research was funded by Procter & Gamble and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, two of the four authors work at P&G, and the detergent used in the test was P&G's own Ariel pods. These are the Leeds and P&G researchers' findings, not Love Brands data — and Love Brands sells a competing pak, so you should weigh the result knowing who paid for it.
The practical read: if your machine offers a shorter cycle at a lower temperature, that pairing is what performed best in the study. Less dye leaving the garment means the color stays in the garment.
