Rose Quartz: History, Meaning and Symbolism
Rose quartz is the pink variety of quartz: silicon dioxide, SiO2, the same mineral species as clear rock crystal, amethyst and citrine. It sits at 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. What makes it pink is not the quartz itself — it is a tangle of microscopic pink fibers trapped inside the stone, identified by researchers at Caltech in 2001.
Almost everything else people say about rose quartz — that it is the stone of love, that Mesopotamians strung it into beads nine thousand years ago, that it carries a measurable frequency — belongs to different categories of statement. This page keeps those categories apart, because mixing them is how a mineral page turns into a sales pitch.
How to read this page: five separate registers

What rose quartz is made of
Yes, rose quartz is real quartz. It is not a trade name for a different stone, not glass, and not a dyed material. It is the mineral quartz — silicon dioxide, SiO2 — in a pink variety. Quartz is among the most abundant minerals in Earth's continental crust, which is part of why it turns up in so many places and so many centuries of human use.
Two numbers do most of the practical work:
- Formula: SiO2. One silicon atom to two oxygen atoms, in a trigonal crystal structure.
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale. Quartz is the reference mineral for 7 on the scale Friedrich Mohs devised, as the U.S. National Park Service sets out in its published index of the ten reference minerals. Anything that scratches quartz is harder than 7; anything quartz scratches is softer.
Quartz is also highly resistant to water. Its solubility is negligible at laundry temperatures, so it does not meaningfully dissolve in a wash cycle, in any normal detergent. That single property answers a surprising number of questions people arrive with.
Massive rose quartz versus euhedral pink quartz
Mineralogists split the pink stone into two things, and the split matters because the two get their color in completely different ways.
- Massive rose quartz is the common material — the tumbled spheres, beads and carvings. It forms in the cores of granitic pegmatites and sometimes in massive hydrothermal veins. It is always slightly to highly turbid, never water-clear.
- Euhedral pink quartz is the rare form: well-shaped single crystals, nearly free of internal light scattering, and extremely uncommon. Goreva, Ma and Rossman describe it as photochemically unstable — it fades.
If you own rose quartz, it is almost certainly the massive kind.
Why rose quartz is pink
This was an open question in mineralogy for most of a century. Manganese was proposed in the 1920s. Titanium was proposed in the 1960s. Tiny rutile needles scattering light was proposed in the 1950s and defended into the 1970s. None of it settled.
The answer that stuck came from Caltech. In American Mineralogist volume 86, pages 466–472 (2001), Julia S. Goreva, Chi Ma and George R. Rossman published Fibrous nanoinclusions in massive rose quartz: The origin of rose coloration. Their method was blunt and effective: dissolve the quartz away in hot hydrofluoric acid and see what is left.
What was left, in specimen after specimen, was a mat of pink fibers. Their findings:
- Pink nanofibers were extracted from rose quartz from 29 different pegmatitic and massive vein localities around the world.
- Fiber widths ran from 0.1 to 0.5 micrometers.
- The residue amounted to roughly 50 to 150 parts per million of the starting weight. The color of a rose quartz sphere is carried by a vanishingly small amount of material.
- The fibers' pink color is due to Fe–Ti intervalence charge transfer, producing an optical absorption band at 500 nanometers.
- On X-ray diffraction and pleochroism the best match is dumortierite, a borosilicate — but infrared and Raman spectra did not match standard dumortierite exactly, so the authors concluded it is probably a closely related phase rather than dumortierite itself.
- These fibers do not occur in the rare euhedral pink quartz.
The same team followed up in American Mineralogist volume 87 (2002), pages 269–276, with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and analytical electron microscopy of the same fibers. That study reports that the nanofibers in all samples examined are related to dumortierite, and that boron was detected in all fibers examined by electron energy loss spectroscopy. So the fibers are boron-bearing and dumortierite-related; whether they are dumortierite itself is the part the authors left open.
So the plain answer to why is rose quartz pink: the quartz is colorless, and a trace of foreign fibers inside it is pink.
Why the rare crystals are pink for a different reason
Euhedral pink quartz has no fibers to blame. Its color is attributed instead to hole centers induced by ionizing radiation — a model of substitutional aluminum and phosphorus atoms bridged by an oxygen ion, published by Maschmeyer and Lehmann in 1983 and later supported by synthesized crystals. Those centers are what make it photochemically unstable.
Fading and heat
Rose quartz is not indestructibly colored. Goreva, Ma and Rossman cite two documented behaviors: Cassedanne and Roditi reported that in some Brazilian deposits, specimens sitting on the surface of mine dumps turned milky white over a few years, while material dumped fifty years earlier at other deposits showed no fading at all. Ignatov and colleagues found the color is lost at around 500 °C.
Star rose quartz
Cut a suitable rose quartz as a sphere or cabochon and put a point light source on it, and some pieces show a six-rayed star. That asterism is attributed to the same inclusions: the fibers line up perpendicular to the c axis along three equivalent crystallographic directions, and light scattering off three sets of aligned fibers produces six rays. Color and asterism turned out to have one explanation.
Where rose quartz is mined
Rose quartz comes out of granitic pegmatites and massive hydrothermal veins. It is not rare, and it is not concentrated in one country.
The most useful published locality list is the sample suite in the 2001 Caltech study, because those localities were named in a peer-reviewed paper rather than a catalog. It drew on 29 sources of massive rose quartz:

One Brazilian entry in that paper's sample table is deliberately not in the list above: the Galileia specimen was the study's comparison sample of rare single-crystal pink quartz, not one of the 29 massive samples, and it dissolved entirely without leaving fibers.
Brazil and Madagascar dominate the commercial trade in tumbled and carved rose quartz. South Dakota has the most formal recognition of any single source: the state named rose quartz its official state mineral stone in 1966, and the material is mined in the southern Black Hills near Custer — the same Custer that appears twice in the Caltech sample table.
A sourcing note, stated plainly. Love Brands does not publish a chain-of-custody record for the rose quartz it uses. So this page does not call it ethically sourced, conflict-free, or anything similar. Those are supply-chain claims, and they need supply-chain documents.
Documented history: what archaeology actually shows
Quartz has one of the longest material records of any mineral, for an unglamorous reason: it is everywhere, it is hard, and it survives. Worked quartz shows up across the archaeological record in a way that softer, rarer minerals do not.
Rose quartz specifically is a harder case, and the honest version is more interesting than the marketing version.
What the Gemological Institute of America states
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the body that sets the diamond grading standards the jewelry trade runs on, publishes three historical statements about rose quartz on its rose quartz history and lore page:
- Rose quartz beads dating to roughly 7000 BC have been found in the region once known as Mesopotamia, in present-day Iraq.
- The Assyrians were crafting rose quartz jewelry around 800–600 BC, and the Assyrians and Romans may have been the first to use the stone.
- Romans used rose quartz as a seal, to mark ownership.
GIA is a serious institution and this is the most authoritative version of the claim in circulation. It is also worth saying what GIA does not supply on that page: a site name, an excavation report, a dig director, a publication, or a museum accession number for any of those beads. Read it as the gem trade's received history, which is a real thing, rather than as a cited excavation finding.
What is on the record with a citable text
For a datable ancient source on quartz you can actually go and read, the reference is Pliny the Elder. Book 37 of his Natural History, written in the first century CE, is the most extensive surviving ancient account of gemstones. Pliny explains that rock crystal is “hardened by excessively intense freezing” and notes that the Greeks named it for ice accordingly — which is where krystallos comes from. He lists India, the Alps, Cyprus and Lusitania among its sources.
Pliny is wrong about the mechanism. That is not the point. The point is that the belief is documented, dated and attributable, which is what separates a historical fact from a story.
Note that Pliny is describing clear rock crystal, not the pink variety.
Two modern dates that are fully documented
- 1966 — South Dakota designates rose quartz its official state mineral stone.
- 2001 — Goreva, Ma and Rossman publish the nanofiber explanation for rose quartz color.
A third landmark belongs here but without a year attached to it: Friedrich Mohs devised the hardness scale that fixes quartz at 7, and the U.S. National Park Service still publishes that scale, quartz at 7, as the reference index. The NPS page names Mohs as its creator but gives no date, and this page will not supply one it has not checked in a source.
Cultural belief: the heart, love and the “stone of love”
Rose quartz is called the love stone. That is the answer to why is rose quartz called the love stone, and the reasons are cultural rather than mineralogical.
GIA notes the name and reports that the stone was said to balance the emotions and to settle anger and disappointment. GIA's own verb is stronger than “settle”; this page softens it deliberately, because Love Brands makes no health claim and does not repeat one. In contemporary crystal literature the associations are consistent and easy to summarize: unconditional love, self-compassion, forgiveness, the heart. Rose quartz is the stone people give when they mean affection rather than status — the opposite end of the gift spectrum from a diamond.
Three ordinary things probably explain most of it. What follows is inference — this page's own reasoning, not a documented history:
- The color. Pink reads as soft, warm and human across a lot of cultures. The association between pink and affection is a color convention, and it attaches to the stone that happens to be pink.
- Availability. Rose quartz is common and inexpensive relative to gem-grade stones. A symbol that everyone can hold spreads faster than one that only a few can buy.
- Repetition. A meaning repeated in enough catalogs, shop labels and books becomes the received meaning, whatever its origin.
The love association itself is cultural belief, and it is genuinely interesting as belief. It is not a demonstrated property. No measured effect of rose quartz on mood, emotion, sleep, health or wellbeing is established, and Love Brands makes no health, medical or physiological claim for the stone.
Where the folklore gets retold rather than sourced
Search “rose quartz meaning” and you will meet the same handful of stories on page after page, each site citing the last one. Here is what happens when you follow them back.
The Aphrodite and Adonis story
The popular version: Adonis is killed, Aphrodite rushes to him, their blood mixes, and the stain creates rose quartz.
The classical version is well attested — it is in Book 10 of Ovid's Metamorphoses — and it produces a flower. Adonis is gored by a boar, and from his blood and Aphrodite's tears comes the anemone, the windflower, named for the wind that scatters its petals. Apollodorus records the boar and the death but no flower; the anemone comes from Ovid. A related retelling gives the first red rose, from Aphrodite catching herself on a thorn.
No classical source produces a pink stone. The rose quartz version is a modern graft onto a real myth. It is a nice story; it is not antiquity.
The 7000 BC Mesopotamian beads
This one traces to GIA and gem-trade reference works rather than to a named excavation. It may well be true. It is not, as commonly presented, an archaeological citation, and no page repeating it seems able to name the dig.
Egyptian anti-aging face masks
GIA's actual statement is that Egyptians believed quartz could prevent aging. The widely circulated upgrade — carved rose quartz face masks used as a beauty treatment — is a different and much more specific claim, and it does not come with a source.
The frequency numbers
Specific frequency figures for rose quartz circulate widely in crystal and wellness writing. We could not find a published laboratory measurement behind any of them, so none appears in this guide. A number with no traceable measurement behind it is not a fact.
Two things are worth understanding here even if such a measurement existed. First, acoustic or vibrational measurements of a mineral describe how a sample behaves in a laboratory. They say nothing about laundry, nothing about water in a washing machine, and nothing about people. Second, “frequency” in the Love Brands catalog is a product line name — the Aura Frequency Starter Pack is a separate item — not a description of a property of rose quartz. That naming belongs to the brand philosophy register, not the demonstrated one.
A short test you can apply anywhere
- Does the claim name a source you could check — a paper, a statute, a museum record, a dig?
- If it names a number, does anyone name the measurement that produced it?
- Does it describe a belief people held, or assert an effect on a person?
- Would the seller lose the sale if the claim were removed? That is not proof of anything, but it tells you how hard to look.
Rose quartz as a color: Pantone's 2016 Color of the Year
Pantone named its Color of the Year for 2016 as a pair: PANTONE 13-1520 Rose Quartz and PANTONE 15-3919 Serenity — a soft pink and a soft blue, revealed together in one announcement rather than one shade winning outright.
Pantone described the pairing in terms of balance between a warmer rose tone and a cooler, more tranquil blue. The name moved quickly from mineralogy into design, which is why searching for rose quartz now returns a mix of mineralogy and home decor.
Two things are worth keeping separate:
- The mineral is SiO2 with pink nanofibers inside it, related to dumortierite, a boron-bearing aluminosilicate.
- The Pantone color is a standardized specification for reproducing a hue in ink, paint, plastic and textile. It contains no mineral. It is named after the stone the way “emerald green” is named after emerald.

One clarification worth making because the two get confused: LOVE PAKS is a registered United States trademark, USPTO registration number 8371488. A trademark is a legal right in a name. It is not a patent, and it is not an assessment by any agency that a product works in a particular way. Nobody at the trademark office evaluated rose quartz.

The wider category question — whether crystal-infused laundry detergent is a meaningful thing at all — comes down to the same split this page has kept throughout. The cleaning is chemistry.
