Plant-Based Laundry Detergent: What It Means and How to Choose

Plant-based laundry detergent uses cleaning agents derived from plants — usually coconut, corn or other vegetable oils — instead of petroleum. In the United States the term has no legal definition and no minimum plant content, so the useful question is which ingredients are plant-derived. Love Brands sells Love Paks, plant-based pre-measured laundry paks packed 39 to a refill pouch, in a scented Citrus Flower Blossom version and a Dye & Scent Free version.

This guide explains what the phrase covers, what it does not cover, and how to compare two products that both use it. It is written by Love Brands, which sells laundry paks, so it also states plainly where Love Paks meet the standard described here and where the evidence is still missing.

What "plant-based" actually means on a US detergent label

No US agency defines "plant-based" for laundry detergent. There is no minimum plant content, no test a product has to pass, and no registry to check. A detergent that is 5% plant-derived and one that is 95% plant-derived can both print the words on the front of the bag.

Three federal bodies touch the label, and none of them supplies a definition:

  • The Federal Trade Commission polices environmental marketing through the Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260). Section 260.16 covers renewable materials, and it tells marketers to qualify a "made with renewable materials" claim unless the item, excluding minor incidental components, is made entirely with renewable materials. The FTC's own example of an adequate qualification is a stated share — packaging described as "made from 50% plant-based renewable materials," with an explanation of why the material is renewable. Under the FTC's framework, the honest form of a plant-based claim is a number.
  • The USDA BioPreferred Program is voluntary, and it is the only federal program that verifies how much of a product comes from plants. Biobased content is the ratio of new organic carbon to total organic carbon, measured by an ASTM-certified lab using ASTM D6866. To carry the USDA Certified Biobased Product label, a product in the category USDA designates General Purpose Laundry Products must be at least 34% biobased, which is the minimum USDA publishes for that category.
  • The Consumer Product Safety Commission enforces the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, which requires cautionary labeling on products that qualify as hazardous substances. If a household cleaning product is not a hazardous substance, there is no federal requirement to print an ingredient list at all.

State law fills part of that gap. California's Cleaning Product Right to Know Act of 2017 (SB 258) requires manufacturers of designated cleaning products sold in California to disclose intentionally added ingredients on the product's website and on the label. Manufacturers do not print separate labels for one state, so in practice you can usually find an ingredient list for any detergent sold nationally — on the bag, or on the brand's website.

The pattern is worth noticing. The three terms that sound most reassuring are the three that nobody defines. The terms that mean something specific are the ones attached to a test, a standard, or a listing number you can look up.

Plant-derived vs. petroleum-derived: where the ingredients come from

Almost all of a detergent's cleaning work is done by surfactants. A surfactant molecule has two ends. One end is attracted to water; the other end is attracted to oil and grease. Dropped into a wash, the oil-loving ends bury themselves in the greasy soil on your clothes while the water-loving ends stay in the water, and the soil gets lifted off the fabric and held in suspension until it drains away. That is the whole mechanism. Everything else in the bottle or the pak is there to help it along.

The oil-loving end of a surfactant is a fatty chain, and that chain has to be built from something. There are two common starting materials:

  • Oleochemical, or plant-derived. Fats and oils — most often palm kernel oil, coconut oil, or other vegetable oils — are processed into fatty alcohols, which are then turned into surfactants.
  • Petrochemical. The same fatty chains are built from crude oil, natural gas, gas liquids, or coal.

Here is the part that most articles about plant-based detergent leave out. A surfactant molecule carries no memory of where its carbon came from. When two molecules have the same structure — the same chain length, the same degree of branching — they behave the same way, in the wash and in the water afterwards. Cowan-Ellsberry and colleagues, in Environmental Safety of the Use of Major Surfactant Classes in North America (Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology, 2014, vol. 44 no. 17, pp. 1893–1993, DOI 10.1080/10739149.2013.803777), report that linear alcohol ethoxylates undergo rapid primary and ultimate biodegradation, that slight branching of the alkyl chain does not hinder that biodegradation, and that it is alkyl chain length and degree of branching that govern how these molecules sorb and break down. That review does not itself set oleochemical against petrochemical feedstocks, and this page does not claim it did; the load-bearing point is the structural one, because structure is what the environment responds to. Feedstock choice is largely a question of the relative cost and availability of raw materials.

Nor is plant-derived automatically the lower-impact option. Shah, Arslan, Cirucci, O'Brien and Moss, Comparison of Oleo- vs Petro-Sourcing of Fatty Alcohols via Cradle-to-Gate Life Cycle Assessment (Journal of Surfactants and Detergents, 2016, vol. 19 no. 6, pp. 1333–1351, DOI 10.1007/s11743-016-1867-y), compared fatty alcohols from palm kernel oil with fatty alcohols from petrochemicals. In the base case the petrochemical route came out lower on greenhouse gas emissions — roughly 2.97 kg CO₂e per kilogram of fatty alcohol delivered against roughly 5.27 kg for the palm kernel route — and it came out better in 12 of the 18 impact categories assessed, with the palm kernel route better in the remaining 6. But the palm result swung enormously with agricultural practice. At the favorable end of the scenarios modeled — planted on existing cropland, with mill effluent treated and palm waste mulched — the plant-derived route reached about −1.5 kg CO₂e per kilogram; at the unfavorable end, with peatland conversion and vented methane, it reached about 16.7 kg.

The practical reading: how a plant is farmed matters more than the fact that it is a plant. "Plant-derived" tells you about a supply chain, not about a result. It is a reasonable thing to prefer, and a poor thing to assume.

Does plant-based detergent clean as well as conventional detergent?

That depends on the formula, not on the feedstock — and the honest answer is that the category has a mixed record.

Cleaning chemists describe a wash using Sinner's circle: four variables that trade off against each other. Temperature, chemistry, mechanical action and time. Lower one and you have to raise another. A cold wash removes temperature from the equation, so the chemistry has to work harder.

The chemistry in a laundry detergent is usually four things:

  1. Surfactants lift oily and greasy soil, as described above.
  2. Enzymes chop up specific stains. Proteases break down proteins such as blood, grass and milk; amylases break down starches; lipases break down fats. Modern detergent enzymes are selected to stay active at low and ambient temperatures, which is a large part of why cold washing works at all.
  3. Builders soften the water so that minerals in it do not tie up the surfactant.
  4. Optional extras — bleach, optical brighteners, anti-redeposition polymers, fragrance.

None of those four is inherently plant-derived or inherently petroleum-derived, and the phrase "plant-based" on a label tells you nothing about whether a product contains enzymes at all. A plant-based detergent with a well-built enzyme package can outclean a petroleum-based one without enzymes, and the reverse is equally possible.

As for the category record, there is no single verdict to report, and you should be suspicious of any page that offers you one. "Plant-based" is not a performance specification. Two detergents that both carry the phrase can be built completely differently — one with a full enzyme package, one with none — so cleaning performance has to be judged product by product rather than category by category. Love Brands has not commissioned an independent head-to-head test of Love Paks against any named competitor, and does not claim one.

One thing plant-based formulas are frequently designed for is cold water, and that is where the environmental arithmetic is unambiguous. ENERGY STAR reports that water heating consumes about 90% of the energy it takes to operate a clothes washer. Washing cold is, for most households, a bigger environmental lever than which detergent is in the drawer.

Formats: pre-measured paks, liquid, sheets and powder

Format is independent of formula. Any of these can be made with plant-derived surfactants.

Two things are worth knowing about paks specifically.

Safety. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned repeatedly about single-load liquid laundry packets and young children. Its guidance is to keep packets sealed in their original packaging, locked up and out of a child's sight and reach, not to let children handle them, and to call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 immediately if a packet is swallowed or gets in someone's eye. This applies to every brand of pak, including ours.

The film. The wrapper that dissolves in the wash is its own material with its own environmental questions, separate from the detergent it contains. It is worth reading up on what the film around a laundry pak is made of before you decide a pak is or is not the right format for you. That is a category explainer. Love Brands has not published what the film around a Love Pak is made of, so nothing on this page should be read as a claim either way.

What "plant-based" does not tell you about fragrance, film or packaging

The claim covers the cleaning ingredients. It says nothing about three things buyers often assume it covers.

Fragrance

Plant-derived fragrance is still fragrance. Essential oils are plant-derived by definition, and they are also among the more common causes of fragrance sensitivity. If you are avoiding scent, the words to look for are "no added fragrance" or "fragrance free," not "plant-based." Be aware that "unscented" sometimes means a masking fragrance has been added to cover the smell of the base formula — a different thing from a product with no fragrance in it.

The film and the packaging

The pouch, the jug, the box and the pak film are separate materials from the detergent. A plant-derived formula can arrive in a rigid plastic jug; a petroleum-derived formula can arrive in a lightweight refill pouch. Judge those separately, and read biodegradable vs. microplastic laundry paks for what the disposal question actually turns on.

Biodegradability

Two different standards get quoted, and they answer different questions.

  • OECD Test Guideline 301 defines "ready biodegradability" for a single substance in a lab. A substance passes if it reaches roughly 60–70% biodegradation, depending on the method, within 28 days. This is a test of an ingredient, not of a whole product, and it is the number a manufacturer should be able to give you for its surfactants.
  • The FTC Green Guides govern what you may print. An unqualified "biodegradable" claim on a product means the entire item completely decomposes within one year after customary disposal, and the marketer needs competent and reliable scientific evidence to say so.

Those are not interchangeable. A surfactant that passes OECD 301 does not make a package biodegradable, and a brand that quotes one while implying the other is telling you less than it appears to.

How to compare two plant-based detergents in five minutes

  1. Look for the ingredient list. Because of California's disclosure law, most nationally sold detergents publish one online. Start there — the list is what turns an adjective on the front of the bag into something you can check. If you cannot find one, ask the brand for it.
  2. Look for a number, not an adjective. "Plant-based" is an adjective. "X% plant-derived by weight, excluding water" is a number. A USDA Certified Biobased percentage is a number a third party measured.
  3. Check any certification for a listing number. EPA Safer Choice and USDA BioPreferred both maintain public databases. A logo you cannot look up is a logo.
  4. Check whether it contains enzymes, especially if you wash cold and deal with food, body or grass stains.
  5. Work out cost per load. Divide the pack price by the number of loads the pack actually delivers, at the dose you actually use — not the dose on the box.
  6. Decide the fragrance question separately. Scented, unscented and fragrance-free are three different things.
  7. Judge the packaging separately from the formula.

Working out cost per load

The arithmetic is one division. Pack price ÷ number of loads = cost per load. For a pre-measured pak at one pak per standard load, the number of loads is simply the pak count.

Two adjustments make the comparison honest. If you routinely run large or heavily soiled loads and use two paks, halve the loads per pack and double the cost per load. And with liquids, measure what you actually pour — overdosing is common, and it silently changes the real cost per load. A larger pack does not automatically work out cheaper per load either, so run the division on the pack in front of you instead of assuming.

When those figures and the ingredient list exist, they will appear on the product pages, and this guide will link to them. Rose quartz, and keeping four things separate

Love Paks are rose quartz infused. That statement gets confusing fast unless four different kinds of claim are kept apart, so here they are, labeled.

Loads of Love

Loads of Love is Love Brands' give-back program. When a customer buys through a participating organization's link, 20% of the net sales from that link goes to that organization.
